OUR SERVICES | KERRVILLE, TEXAS
Therapy that considers the whole picture.
People come to therapy for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes there's a specific experience they want to work through. Other times, it's a combination of things that have built up over the years.
At Re.New Counseling and Associates, we work with children, teens, adults, and families navigating trauma, difficult relationships, and complex life circumstances.
Our approach is shaped by years of clinical experience and an understanding that what someone is experiencing today often connects to much more of their story.
HOW WE WORK
Getting to know you is part of the work.
We don't expect everyone who walks through our doors to have the same needs, experiences, or goals.
Some clients benefit from structured, evidence-based trauma treatment. Others need time to better understand their experiences, relationships, and the patterns they've developed along the way.
We'll work together to understand what's bringing you in and determine which approaches make the most sense for your circumstances.
01 / AREAS OF SUPPORT
Trauma & Complex PTSD
Trauma isn't always connected to one specific event. For some people, it develops through years of difficult relationships, instability, neglect, abuse, or circumstances where they had very little control over what was happening.
These experiences can continue to affect how we respond to stress, connect with other people, and understand ourselves long after the circumstances have changed.
We work with individuals navigating PTSD, complex trauma, childhood adversity, and other experiences that continue to affect their daily lives.
Therapy offers an opportunity to better understand those experiences, recognize patterns that may have developed in response to them, and begin addressing the ways they're affecting life today.
02 / AREAS OF SUPPORT
EMDR Therapy
Some experiences are difficult to move past, even when we understand what happened and know we're no longer in the same situation.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help people process distressing memories and reduce the emotional impact those experiences continue to have.
EMDR involves a structured treatment process that includes preparation, developing coping resources, and working through specific memories using bilateral stimulation.
Shauna Wickham, MS, LPC-S, is an EMDRIA-certified EMDR therapist with extensive experience working with trauma and complex mental health concerns.
EMDR sessions may be available in person or through a secure virtual platform, depending on clinical appropriateness.
03 / AREAS OF SUPPORT
Therapy for Children, Teens & Families
Children and teenagers don't always have the words to explain what they're experiencing.
Changes in behavior, difficulties at school, emotional outbursts, withdrawal, or challenges in relationships can sometimes be connected to stress, trauma, family transitions, or experiences they haven't fully understood.
Our work with children, teens, and families focuses on understanding what's happening beneath those difficulties.
We rely on our experience with child welfare systems, residential treatment programs, foster and adoptive agencies, family-of-origin reunification, and trauma-focused interventions to support young people and the adults who care for them.
When appropriate, we involve parents and caregivers in the therapeutic process to help strengthen understanding, communication, and connection at home.
Services available for children ages 8 and older, teens, and families.
04 / AREAS OF SUPPORT
Attachment, Adoption & Foster Care
Family relationships can be complicated, especially when they've involved separation, instability, disrupted attachments, or significant changes in caregiving.
Children and adults with experiences involving adoption or foster care may carry questions about belonging, identity, trust, and relationships. Parents and caregivers may also need support understanding behaviors and experiences that don't always have straightforward explanations.
Our experience includes working with foster families, adoptive families, children in residential care, and parents navigating the child welfare system.
We approach this work with an understanding of how trauma, attachment, family history, and the larger systems surrounding a person can influence their experiences.
05 / AREAS OF SUPPORT
Substance Use & Addiction
Substance use can become connected to the ways people manage stress, painful experiences, difficult emotions, or circumstances that feel overwhelming.
For some individuals, trauma and substance use are closely related. For others, the relationship is more complicated.
Our approach considers the experiences and circumstances surrounding substance use, including mental health concerns, relationships, and past experiences.
We work to better understand what's happening and support clients in developing healthier ways of responding to the challenges they're facing.

OUR CLINICAL APPROACH
Experience matters. So does finding the right approach for you.
Therapy looks different depending on the person, their experiences, and what they're hoping to work through. We rely on evidence-based approaches to help us understand what's happening and determine what kind of support makes sense.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy used to help people process distressing memories and experiences that continue to affect their lives.
Sometimes we understand that something happened in the past, but our reactions to it haven't changed. Certain situations, relationships, or reminders can bring up feelings that seem much bigger than what's happening in the moment.
EMDR uses a structured treatment process that includes preparation, identifying memories to work on, and bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or alternating tapping. The goal is to help the brain process distressing experiences so they become less disruptive in everyday life.
EMDR doesn't require you to describe every detail of a traumatic experience out loud. We'll spend time making sure you understand the process, feel prepared, and have the support you need before beginning memory reprocessing.
Shauna Wickham, MS, LPC-S, is an EMDRIA-certified therapist and offers EMDR in person and virtually when clinically appropriate.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or TF-CBT, is an evidence-based treatment developed to help children and adolescents who are experiencing difficulties related to traumatic experiences.
Children don't always express what they're feeling through words. Trauma can show up through changes in behavior, difficulty managing emotions, anxiety, withdrawal, sleep problems, or challenges at home and school.
TF-CBT helps young people understand their reactions, develop coping skills, and work through traumatic experiences in a structured, developmentally appropriate way.
The process typically includes individual work with the child or teen, along with participation from a parent or supportive caregiver when appropriate. Caregivers can learn more about trauma responses, develop ways to support their child, and strengthen communication and connection.
Shauna's experience working with children in foster care, residential treatment, and family reunification informs her understanding of the complicated circumstances many young people and families face.
Treatment is adapted to the child's age, experiences, needs, and family circumstances.

Trauma-informed counseling is an approach to therapy that recognizes how difficult or overwhelming experiences can affect a person's emotions, relationships, behavior, and sense of safety.
Not everyone who comes to therapy has experienced a single identifiable traumatic event. Sometimes the experiences that affect us most have happened gradually, through years of instability, complicated family relationships, loss, or situations where we had very little control.
Being trauma-informed means we pay attention to those experiences and how they may be connected to what's happening today.
We'll take time to understand your history without assuming that every difficulty you're experiencing is the result of trauma. Therapy is collaborative, and we'll talk openly about your goals, what feels helpful, and the pace of our work together.
Depending on your needs, trauma-informed counseling may involve exploring relationship patterns, developing coping strategies, understanding emotional responses, or incorporating more structured treatment approaches.
Our goal is to create a therapeutic relationship where you feel respected, involved in your care, and comfortable asking questions along the way.
