A LITTLE ABOUT US
Therapy starts with getting to know each other.
Hi, we're Thomas and Shauna Wickham!
We're a husband-and-wife team and the faces behind Re.New Psychology & Counseling Associates.
Together, we've spent decades walking alongside children, teenagers, adults, and families through some of life's most difficult and complicated seasons. While we each have our own personalities and approaches to therapy, we share the same heart for people and a genuine belief that healing, growth, and change are possible.
Our hope is that from the moment you connect with us, you feel welcomed, understood, and comfortable being yourself.
We're really glad you're here, and we'd love for you to get to know us!

I'm the kind of therapist who will sit with you in the hard stuff, tell you the truth with compassion, and challenge you when you need it, but never lose sight of the person you're capable of becoming.
I care deeply about the people I work with, and I want you to feel comfortable being yourself in my office. I'm warm and compassionate, but I'm also direct and solution-focused. I believe honesty matters, especially when it's delivered with kindness.
Sometimes therapy means having someone sit beside you while you work through something painful. Other times, it means having someone help you recognize a pattern, take responsibility for something you can change, or see a situation from a different perspective. Both are important parts of how I work.

I've spent much of my career working with people and families whose lives have been affected by trauma, abuse, abandonment, addiction, and complicated family circumstances.
My experience includes working with children in foster care, adoptive families, parents navigating reunification, and women and mothers rebuilding their lives after significant hardship.
Adoption is also part of my own family's story, which has given me a personal appreciation for how complicated family relationships, identity, and belonging can be.
Over the years, I've contracted with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and worked with residential treatment centers, foster care agencies, community mental health organizations, and nonprofit settings. Those experiences have shaped how I understand trauma and the ways our past experiences can influence our relationships, decisions, and beliefs about ourselves.
-
My approach is relational, trauma-informed, and individualized.
I ask questions, listen carefully, and help you make connections between your experiences, thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. I'm an EMDRIA-certified therapist and also certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and I incorporate these approaches when they're appropriate for the person I'm working with.
I don't believe there's one approach that works for everyone. We'll talk about what you're experiencing, what you'd like to change, and what makes sense for you.
Faith has been an important part of my journey. I recognize that faith and spirituality can also be meaningful parts of someone else's story. If your beliefs are important to you, or you're struggling with questions about faith or purpose, there's room for those conversations here. I respect each client's individual beliefs and may incorporate spirituality into our sessions when it's something they want to explore.

Staying active with my family is a big part of my life. I value genuine relationships, honesty, loyalty, and people who are comfortable being themselves.
I love fitness, nutrition, being outdoors, and pretty much anything that gives me an opportunity to keep learning. I also have a creative side and enjoy decorating and design.
I love adventure, traveling, and adrenaline-filled activities with my adult sons and husband. From whitewater rafting in Alaska to scuba diving and glacier swimming, I'm always up for a new experience.

I tend to bring a pretty calm and steady presence into the counseling room.
I know starting therapy can feel uncomfortable, especially if you're not used to talking about what's going on in your life. My goal is to make that process feel approachable. I want you to know that you can take your time, ask questions, and talk openly without feeling pressured or judged.
I'm patient, practical, and collaborative. I enjoy helping people take a situation that feels complicated or overwhelming and begin to understand it a little more clearly.
I believe people make meaningful progress when they feel heard, respected, and involved in the process.

I've spent much of my professional life working with teenagers, young adults, and families navigating difficult circumstances.
During my time as Director of Therapeutic Services at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas, where I also served as adjunct faculty, I worked closely with young adults facing emotional, personal, academic, and developmental challenges.
For the past 13 years, I've served as the Executive Director of Arms of Hope, a residential treatment program supporting children and families facing significant hardship. That work has given me a deep appreciation for the ways trauma, family relationships, stability, and supportive environments affect people's lives.
Alongside my full-time leadership positions, I've continued practicing counseling in private practice for the past 23 years. While leadership has been a significant part of my professional life, I've always valued the opportunity to sit down with someone individually and help them work through what's happening in their life.
-
My approach is grounded primarily in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT.
I believe understanding the connections between our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors can make a meaningful difference in how we handle life's challenges.
In our sessions, we'll look at the patterns that may be contributing to what you're experiencing and talk about practical ways to approach things differently.
I want therapy to give you something useful to take into your everyday life. That might mean learning to recognize unhelpful thought patterns, developing healthier coping skills, improving communication, or finding more effective ways to respond to stressful situations.
I'm not someone who believes therapy needs to feel confrontational or intimidating. I prefer a thoughtful, encouraging approach where we work together to identify realistic goals and make progress toward them.
-
My family is one of the most important parts of my life, and I love spending time with them.
I'm also happiest when I can get outdoors. Mountain biking is one of my favorite activities because I enjoy the challenge, the fresh air, and the opportunity to clear my head.
I'm an avid reader and naturally curious about the world. I enjoy learning about different subjects, keeping up with current events, and understanding new perspectives.
After years of balancing leadership responsibilities and counseling, I've come to appreciate the simple things: family, meaningful relationships, time outdoors, and opportunities to help others.
